The European Union is concerned about the resurgence of violence in Ethiopia and the escalation of the conflict between the country and Eritrea. The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, said this on Monday. Belgian Foreign minister added on X Tuesday morning: “Alongside the EU and its Member States, Belgium is alarmed by the rising violence in Ethiopia. De-escalation, civilian protection, humanitarian access, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference are urgent necessities. Only dialogue and diplomacy can lead to peace.”

“This situation risks triggering a wider regional conflict, with serious consequences for peace and stability across the Horn of Africa,” Kallas said in a press release. “The EU calls for immediate de-escalation on all fronts and urges the actors involved to refrain from any action or rhetoric that could heighten tensions. External actors must refrain from any interference, use their influence to prevent further escalation, and promote political solutions and diplomacy.”

After months of tension, fighting broke out again in northern Ethiopia in late September. Federal forces are facing troops from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which had exercised de facto control over the regional state and has once again challenged the federal government. The clashes are taking place amid extreme tensions with neighbouring Eritrea, which Addis Ababa accuses of supporting the TPLF.
